Cottonseed Glory didn't originally start out as a quilt shop. In fact, the origins of what is now Cottonseed Glory were in a craft store started back in 1978. Pat Steiner and several friends who were avid crafters realized that they had a problem. They had made so many craft products that they didn't have room to make any more!
They decided to start a store at which to sell the crafts they'd created, giving them an excuse to keep crafting. Gradually the store also began to sell a few craft supplies, including their very first fabrics--a whole nine bolts of fabric, which were replaced once they'd sold. Back then, before quilting had really been revived, manufacturers of fabric were generally creating fabrics for clothing items and other uses. These fabrics, double-knit or made of blends like cotton with polyester, just weren't as good for quilting as 100% cotton. Quilters really looked hard to find the few best sources of 100% cotton fabric available.
They would use fabrics that had small patterns, often flowers, as being the most appropriate for their craft. The interest in quilting began to grow at that time, though, and soon customers were asking about classes to learn quilting, and the number of bolts of fabric available was increasing. It was time for a store just for quilting.
The Annapolis Quilt Guild started at this time, as more and more people in the Annapolis area became interested again in the art of quilting and wanted lessons and clubs and events. In 1981, Pat Steiner was looking for a new, larger store in which she would offer fabrics, quilting supplies, and classes for the many quilters in the area. It was a customer who came in to tell her that she'd found the perfect location! Cottonseed Glory moved from downtown Annapolis to West Annapolis, and then in 1993 made one last move--this one just downstairs, to the larger location where the store is currently located.
Today, Cottonseed Glory serves the avid quilters of Annapolis and the surrounding areas, attracting quilters from Maryland, Delaware, Washington, D.C., Virginia, and even beyond.
